A problem was encountered during Race #3. SI prescribed a gate at the leeward end of each leg; however, due to heavy winds the Race Committee installed only one mark for the leeward mark. The SIs also prescribed that a "Red" mark would be used for the finish line on the starboard side of the signal boat. Unfortunately, at a distance the "Orange" leeward mark and the "Red" finish mark appeared to be the same color. This caused confusion for the competitors, some of whom assumed the two marks were "the Gate." This caused some boats to round the "leeward mark" to starboard while some rounded it to port and some rounded the "Red finish mark" to port. The PRO made the decision to abandon the race during leg 3. This appeared to be the best decision since no amount of redress hearings would be able to sort out which boats had rounded the "leeward mark" correctly. For the balance of the races, the "Red" finish mark was not laid until all boats had rounded the leeward mark.
