In one of the hearings, the panel hearing the case learned from a boat that she hailed in English 'Hoi! Tack' instead of 'Room to tack'. The hailed boat did not respond. The panel concluded that since the hail did not comply with RRS 20.1, the hail is invalid and RRS 20 did not apply.
Since RRS 20, Room to tack at an obstruction, is a safety rule, guidance is sought from the Racing Rules Committee on how to address a situation where the magic words 'Room to tack' are not hailed.
