The 2025 Nacra 15 World Championship was held at La Rochelle Nautique. There were 79 entries entered from 11 nations.
The venue was ideal, with modern and top-quality facilities. The sailing area was also superb.
The race management was of a high standard. The fleet was divided into two groups with a separate course for each fleet. Four races were scheduled per day except for the last racing day. The target time was 30 minutes per race. This allowed for lots of racing over the five days. A total of 16 races were achieved for each fleet.
The jury had five judges from four nations (FRA, BEL, UK, NZL), with three IJs and two NJs. Appendix T was in effect. Hearings proceeded a mixture of full jury panels and three person panels under N1.4(b). A total of 22 hearing requests were received. This included several protests from the jury and several support person hearings.
The volume of hearings did at times put pressure on the jury and cause delays. In hindsight, we could perhaps have implemented more efficient systems for processing and scheduling requests, and made more use of N1.4(b). A sixth jury member would have been helpful as it could have allowed for two panels.
Because the racing did not start until 2:30PM on most days, some hearings did not conclude until very late in the evening (past 10pm). This is not a problem for the jury but arguably is less than ideal for youth sailors. It is noted that a higher than normal number of hearings proceeded in the absence of one of the parties under RRS 63.1(b).
A few coaches were observed not to be wearing their kill cord on the first day of racing. The jury called support person hearings to address this. The outcome of these hearings was that the coaches were required to remain below the starting line for the next day of racing. One coach did not comply with this restriction, so the jury called a further hearing and extended the penalty by an additional day.
The jury was on the water each day with two RIBs (one on each fleet in the qualifying series, two on the Gold fleet in the final series). Appendix P was in effect, however there were no yellow flag penalties over the entire event. This is likely due to most of the racing taking place in moderate range wind conditions.
The jury hospitality at La Rochelle was excellent. The accommodation was comfortable and conveniently located. The meals were good quality and catered for the jury’s antisocial hours. - NZLLM12
