Comments on rule questions, new interpretations, problems, unpopular Rule 62 (Redress) decisions, summary of the facts, conclusions and decisions of Rule 69 (Allegations of Gross Misconduct) actions, problems with Sailing Instructions or Notice of Race and experience with experimental procedures.
During the championship the laser class held a forum of coaches and sailors to discuss the future of rule 42 in the laser class. Over 30 attended.
In summary the general consensus of the meeting was that rule 42 should not be reduced because of the potential for increased injury to sailors (particularly youth), and that the laser class equipment is not designed for the additional loading which would result from any increase in permitted kinetics. If rule 42 was relaxed the class equipment would need to be redesigned to avoid an inevitable increase in gear failure.
It was also thought that the quality and consistency of rule 42 judging would improve if class specific video was used to explain rule interpretations. The practice of rotating judges around courses and classes in multi-class regattas was raised as a significant cause of inconsistent judging from one day to the next.
The Omani race management team did an excellent job.
