The event tested for the first time a hybrid way of umpiring the medal series with both drones and umpires on the water. However, given the rudimental state of testing, the umpires in the booth were only giving information to the umpires on the water, mostly like a wing is doing in match racing. To umpire from the booth, the raw drone footage from the media team was used and it worked quite efficiently as there was no significant delay between the live action and what was shown on the screen. However, in a couple of situations there was a delay. To communicate, the umpires used a WhatsApp Call, where communication was only allowed from the booth to the umpires but not vice-versa. The communication worked very good as the audio level was adequate and clear enough to transmit information. The information given from the booth to the umpires, contained specific words, that were pre established, in order to communicate a risky situation between two or more boards, to communicate possible overlaps, mark-room, change of course etc. Three drones were used, all provided from the media team. Two of them were running alongside the boards on each side, and the third was positioned above the boards. In addition the tracking was used to get an idea on where the boards were on the course. Even though, the system was used for the first time and of course there is room for improvement, it showed that drone umpiring is possible with the boards but there are still some obstacles to work on. During the event, a board in the U23 Women Fleet protested the whole heat of the U23 Men Gold fleet for interfering with her when they crossed the race area to get back ashore. A hearing was held with all the fleet as parties and drone footage was used to establish whether boards interfered with her. - GRESK14
