The New York ? Barcelona Race is part of the IMOCA 60 circuit and was managed extremely efficiently by Ocean Sports Management of Lausanne,
As the start was in a busy area of New York harbour the OCS penalty was changed in a similar way to the procedure used in the world match racing tour such that a penalized boat could elect to take its penalty by crossing behind the stern of all boats in the fleet.
The only rules issue during the race was caused by a broken shaft seal on board Safran during heavy weather. The seal was replaced, no penalty was awarded.
Prior to the race there was a significant amount of consultation with the jury regarding drafting issues in both the Notice of Race and sailing instructions. More assistance to organisers in terms of creating a appropriate oceanic supplements to Appendix K and L of the rules would help .
