Good sailing conditions almost the whole week (except tricky conditions on the Medal Stage day) which allowed completing the program.
After SWC in Palma, ISAF confirmed the new format for racing and scoring. The format for each Olympic event consisted of a single or split fleet qualification series, depending on the number of entries. Ranking at the end of qualifying series, including one discard after two races had been sailed, was counted as a Carry Forward race in the final series. It was counted as one, first race in the final series.
At the end of the final series, after a second discard, the top ten ranked boats advanced to the medal stage, which consisted of two medal races, (4 for 49ers). Both in the Qualifying and Final series, the first place is scored 0 points and second 2, third 3, etc. In medal stage points are doubled.
One difference to Palma was that the CF race was not discardable in Hyeres.
The NoR stated that all boats should display their national flags on both sides of her mainsail (NOR 2.3). RC protested 3 boats at the end of the first day: 2 in 470, 1 in laser.
The 470 sailors where imposed discretionary penalties of 1 point per race sailed without flag.
The laser sailor had been given a late entry a few days before the event, and had therefore not been able to order and receive a flag before the 1st day of racing. He painted a flag in his sail. The jury considered that he made a genuine effort to comply with NOR 2.3 and therefore imposed a discretionary penalty of 0 points.
45 protests were lodged.
