Prior to starting the 360 mile race from Dubai to Muscat the race committee was aware of severe weather forecasts. On the first night of the race headwinds of up to 35 knots and rough seas were expected. On the second night winds of 40 - 50 knots and violent seas were forecast when rounding the Musandam Peninsula at the entrance to the Straits of Hormuz. In the skippers briefing prior to the start boats were advised of the conditions. The race committee consulted with the protest committee in accordance with appendix N2.1 to find safe and equitable solutions which would permit the race to start. Sailors were advised that boats that who had not reached a defined safety line by a specified time would be required to seek shelter in a place of refuge until permitted to resume racing by the race committee. This was a change to the NOR. All skippers were consulted on the process to be followed, were in agreement and this was minuted. An amendment to SI's was published to put the change into effect. 7 boats retired on the 28th February. 6 boats took refuge in or near to the port of Khasab on the 1st March and then were instructed to resume racing at 1000 on the 2nd March. There was sail and rigging damage within the fleet but no injuries or safety events requiring assistance from official authorities. Six boats finished. There were no requests for redress. - GBRDB58
