The weather Gods did not shine on the Flying Dutchman World Championship in 2014. There was constant rain during the regatta and the wind was either very strong or too week. There was a little excitement on the first day of measurement when the Official Measurer discovered that approximately 10 new masts costing in excess of 4000EUR did not comply with Class Rule 38. The problem was caused by the manufacturer using a larger than usual jib halyard exit box in the mast, when the jib luff was extended to the mast, contact was made above the measured band. There were 5 meeting between the Measurer and the Jury discussing this problem. At one stage it was thought that those competitors whose masts did not comply would have their entry rejected and ISAF's approval was obtained in accordance with RRS76.3 should it be necessary for this measure to be applied . However after considerable discussion with the competitors the problem was resolved by cutting 11mm off the bottom of the mast and repositioning the goose neck.
The Race Committee's decision to continue racing in the deplorable weather conditions on the first day of the event was very poor judgment. 15 boats retired from the first race with damage and were unable to start in race two that afternoon their regatta was virtually over.
