AN ADDITIONAL PART OF THE SAILING FESTIVAL WAS THE WORK BOAT RACES THE NEXT WEEKEND (GRENADA INDEPENDENCE WEEKEND). SAILING BOATS UNIQUE TO VARIOUS COMMUNITIES RACE TO DETERMINE THE COMMUNITY CHAMPION. SIX RACES WERE RUN OFF THE BEACH FOR EACH OF THE 6 DIFFERENT COMMUNITY BOATS. ALL COURSES WERE ALONG THE BEACH IN CLEAR VIEW OF THE SPECTATORS. AS A PRACTICAL MATTER, RRS PART 2 WAS REDUCED TO ?NO BOUNCE?. EVERY ONE SEEMS TO BE HAPPY WITHTHESE RULES.
FOR THE STARTS THE BOATS ARE IN THE WATER WITH ONE CREW HOLDING THE BOAT AND ONE RUNNER BEHIND A LINE DRAWN BETWEEN TWO FLAGS ON THE BEACH. WHEN CORRECT NUMBER OF RUNNERS WAS LINED UP, A WHISTLE SIGNAL STARTS THE RACE. FINISHES WERE BASED ON WHEN THE RUNNERS GOT TO THE FINISH TENT.
ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON 5 HAND BUILT ONE DESIGN SLOOPS ARE SAILED BY JUNIOR AND SENIOR TEAMS FROM EACH COMMUNITY AND THEN BY THE WINNERS OF THE RACES IN THE COMMUNITY BOATS. A CROWD OF SEVERAL THOUSAND PEOPLE INCLUDING FAMILIES AND TOURISTS WERE ON THE BEACH FOR THE EVENT. THE GRAND PRIZES OF $1000 FOR 1ST, $500 FOR 2ND AND $250 FOR 3RD HELPED BUILD THE CHEERING CROWD.
IT IS A SPECTACULAR EVENT AND SHOWS THAT SAILING CAN REALLY BE A SPECTATOR SPORT.

JUST PRIOR TO THE REGATTA I RECEIVED WORD THAT MR. BAILEY, IJ USV, WAS UNABLE TO ATTEND DUE TO BUSINESS PROBLEMS. WE WERE UNABLE TO FIND A REPLACEMENT IJ SO WE CONTINUED UNDER N 1.2.
DURING THE FIRST DAY OF THE REGATTA IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE RACE COMMITTEE WAS SHORT OF QUALIFIED PERSONNEL AND WOULD NEED HELP WITH THE RACES. WE DECIDED TO HELP THE RACE COMMITTEE AS NEEDED TO PROVIDE THE BEST POSSIBLE RACING FOR THE COMPETITORS. AS A RESULT, WE FUNCTIONED AS AN APPEALABLE PROTEST COMMITTEE. THE COMPETITORS WERE SO INFORMED. THERE WERE NO APPEALS.
