The organizing club has excellent staff, well trained volunteers and is well resourced with equipment, support boats and committee vessels. Support for the international jury was outstanding.
The sailing instructions required the on the water jury to act in accordance with appendix P, to indicate breaches of part 2 rules by blowing a whistle and to indicate breach of the class rule covering hauling out and retraction of bowsprits by displaying a red flag and blowing a whistle.
At the start of the regatta there were numerous breaches of the bowsprit rule. There seemed to be a lack of understanding of the rule and the techniques required to comply with it in quite a large section of the fleet. However by the end of the regatta this issue seemed to have been resolved.
The danger of non retraction of the bowsprit at the leeward gate was illustrated when a competitor forgot to retract the bowsprit and approximately 4 ? 5 feet of the sprit went into the cockpit of the boat in front in between the pushpit and the shroud, with the tip forward of the tiller,. Fortunately it missed the helmsman and caused no damage. The jury terms of reference were such that a protest was initiated by the jury and a boat was disqualified for that race.
Race starts were organized with the principal committee vessel being moored in the centre of the start line with pin end boats at either end of the line and race start signals displayed by a signal boat to windward of the start. The principal committee vessel displayed general or individual recall signals.
Visibility of signals was to the fleet was good. The only issue due to the number of start line committee boats was the time taken to broadcast the names and numbers of boats recalled OCS on VHF.
All starts were conducted under ?P? flag. There were 3 general recalls and two starts with no boats OCS.
