In March 2012 the following rule class rule came into effect;
(j) A boat maybe sculled before the start if the sculling does not propel
the boat.
The introduction of this rule appears to have changed competitors starting techniques, instead of time on distance starts (approaching the line at the gun and at speed from some distance back)boats are now sitting just behind the line above close hauled and holding their position there from as early as the warning signal. Boats are holding their position,manouvering and changing tacks by sculling with no appearant forward movement. As boats are not completing their tacks and are not giving other boats room to keep clear there are a vast number of rule 11, 13, 15 and 16 breaches but the competitors rarely protested.
Two forms of crabbing (propelling the boat sideways) were observed.
One by back winding the mainsail and sculling the other by steering the boat up to head to wind by pulling the boom into the centreline by hand, putting the bow down and then with one powerful scull moving the stern of the boat to windward.
Excellant race management
